For years, experts called for investments in critical prevention, detection, and response capacities for infectious disease threats. Despite the warning, dedicated financing for pandemic PPR was still an unfilled gap when the COVID pandemic broke out. We led the charge in informing and building political support to convince G20 leaders to establish and finance the Pandemic Fund, the world’s first dedicated global fund for pandemic prevention and preparedness, in September 2022.
Our work did not end there: We tracked commitments to the Fund to better understand funding sources and promote transparency and accountability. We established a resource hub and hosted civil society consultations to organise and facilitate access to information about the Fund’s development. We pushed for a consultative approach to the Fund’s design to ensure an inclusive governance model with LMICs, civil society, and community representatives with equal voting seats to donors on the Governing Board. We continue to advocate for an effective and fully capitalised Pandemic Fund.
