Job Location: Brussels (hybrid with priority for in-office work)

Compensation: Rani offers a competitive compensation and benefits package for the right candidate; compensation will depend on level of experience.

About the opportunity
Rani (Resilience Action Network International) is seeking an experienced policy lead with understanding of the biosecurity policy environment at national, EU, or the international level. The emergence of new technologies presents huge societal opportunity – but also some challenges. There is now an exciting window of opportunity to contribute to the evolving landscape by working out how to update existing policymaking apparatus to make sure it is fit-for-purpose for today’s – and future challenges. Rani is working with partners to contribute to some of the biggest threats society is facing – how to keep safe in the era of easily accessible emerging technologies. 

 

Candidates should have a deep understanding of policy and research on the challenges and opportunities related to emerging technologies, particularly nucleic acid synthesis screening, AI, and the intersection between them. The ideal candidate will bring technical knowledge of biosecurity risk and have the ability to translate complex issues into understandable policy goals, and be able to work with a broad spectrum of partners across the biosecurity landscape.

 

Scope of this role

  • Policy lead, biosecurity – working closely with the Executive Director, rani’s consultants and partners to develop robust and evidence-based policy analysis and research;
  • Drive research and analysis to inform impactful policy and advocacy products (briefs, papers, expert views, and reports) and translating complex technical detail into digestible briefings;
  • Engage other technical and subject matter experts and other external stakeholders in academia, industry, and think tanks to development relevant biosecurity policy products
  • Lead the development and ongoing refinement of policy messaging on biosecurity
  • Represent and elevate rani’s biosecurity policy and advocacy priorities as needed
  • Contribute to and participate in regular team and partner meetings and other events and initiatives as relevant
  • Team player with excellent internal communication skills, committed to making rani a great place to work, coming with a solutions-oriented approach to challenges

Requirements for the role

  • Deep experience (typically 5+ years) in biosecurity in Brussels or internationally;
  • Technical knowledge and understanding of the biosecurity landscape, with an awareness of key threats, including an openness to learning more about biosecurity and nucleic acid synthesis and those at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and synthetic biology;
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant national, EU, and/or international policy measures;
  • Excellent research experience, evaluating technical topics from a policy lens;
  • Proven experience developing policy briefings, both deep dives and 2-pagers;
  • Strong experience in representing your organisation with high-level stakeholders;
  • Must have the legal right to work in Brussels, Belgium;
  • Must be a team player with a mission-first attitude to work;
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills and proficiency to write and edit products

 

Desirable for the role

  • Knowledge of EU policy-making an advantage
  • French and other EU languages desirable

 

Required competencies

  • Excellent research and critical thinking skills with a policy lens 
  • Ability to proactively scope strategic policy projects from the start and drive them to completion, including the ability to translate complex technical issues clearly 
  • Ability to think clearly and independently about extreme biosecurity risks 
  • Proven successful experience in drafting impactful policy and advocacy materials
  • Excellent partner and stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and representation skills
